Think of the the root - hyster - as in hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). It was thought that the imbalance the wandering uterus caused within the female body translated into her exaggerated emotions and "odd" behavior. Because of the ties to the uterus, this "disease" demanded a sexual cure. I don't know how the Greeks decided that orgasms would do it, but that was their solution.
